Who We Are
Located in Marin County, California, Vintage Instrument Rental offers an extensive selection of rare and vintage equipment. Our equipment is rented by gigging and recording musicians, record producers and stage, video and film productions around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Drawing on his forty plus years of musical experience, founder and owner, Larry Cragg, brings to Vintage Instrument Rental not only a knowledge of the instruments and how they work but also an understanding of the complex nature of sound and tone. As an established guitar repairman since 1969, Larry has worked for Carlos Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller, Mike Bloomfield, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and many more. Since 1973, he has worked as Neil Young's guitar tech both on the road and in the studio.
As a professional musician and multi-instrumentalist, Larry has had to opportunity to play a broad range of instruments in a variety of situations but he is currently enjoying being the pedal steel player (Loose Change) in the band Buck Nickels and Loose Change. Larry's life-long interest in and experience with tone enhancement and sound amplification has allowed him to work as a member of the Editorial Board of the Tone Quest Report and he served as a contributing writer for Frets Magazine's new product reviews column. It has also afforded him many consulting opportunities. He has worked with individual artists, bands and producers to help determine what combination of instruments and amplification is needed to accomplish the sound they are looking for.
As an enthusiastic collector of guitars and other musical equipment, Larry has through the years chosen individual instruments for their exceptional tone. Known and respected for his skill at guitar set-up, Larry has given this level of attention to every instrument in the Vintage Instrument inventory and with guitar rentals, he includes custom set-ups to accommodate the musician's preference of string gauge and style of playing.
